Cotton will be cultivated on 7,000 hectares of land in the Akaltin, Gulistan, and Boyovut districts of Syrdarya region using advanced technology. This was announced on May 5 during a meeting chaired by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on implementing modern approaches to agriculture in the region.

Although Syrdarya is one of Uzbekistan’s smaller regions by area, the meeting emphasized its significant agricultural potential. Key agricultural zones are located along rivers and canals, the population is known for its strong work ethic, and the region is well-equipped with infrastructure. The meeting reviewed findings from targeted studies in the districts and examined a series of new proposals and development plans.

Among the proposals discussed were crop cultivation strategies tailored to the soil and climate of each area. There were also plans to enhance the productivity of grain, vegetables, and potatoes in desert zones.

As part of broader land rehabilitation efforts, it is planned to restore irrigation systems and return 20,000 hectares of land to productive use over the next two years.

“There are also significant opportunities for food-related projects. Specifically, three large livestock complexes will be launched on 9,000 hectares across the Akaltin, Gulistan, and Boyovut districts. Additionally, cotton will be grown on 7,000 hectares using new technologies,” the report noted.

The region reportedly has 10,000 hectares of orchards and vineyards, but over half are considered unproductive due to outdated plant varieties and obsolete agricultural methods. As a solution, 2,000 hectares will be renewed with high-demand fruit varieties popular in international markets, while the remaining areas will be allocated to interested applicants.

Furthermore, this year will see the completion of a major project to reconstruct 607 kilometers of the “Right Branch” inter-district canal and transition it to digital management. This upgrade is expected to save 35–40 percent of water and improve irrigation on 27,000 hectares of land.

“The head of state approved these proposals and issued directives to increase agricultural productivity, ensure food self-sufficiency, create employment opportunities, and expand processing and export capacities,” the report concluded.
