An indefinite halt will be enforced on mineral mining activities within the Syrdarya basin. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed the relevant decree on March 11.

Effective from May 1, 2024, the decree mandates an indefinite suspension on ore extraction within the Syrdarya riverbed. Furthermore, it increases accountability for environmental damage resulting from unauthorized mining.

Additionally, efforts will be undertaken to fortify eroded banks along the Syrdarya River, restore damaged lands in the coastal region to their natural state, and carry out rehabilitation initiatives.

It's worth noting that on January 30 of this year, Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change, Aziz Abduhakimov, hinted at the possibility of announcing a moratorium on the establishment of new cement plants in Uzbekistan during a meeting of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis.
