The Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan has approved the law “On Amendments and Addenda to Certain Legislative Acts of the Republic of Uzbekistan Aiming at Expanding the Guaranteed Rights of the Opposition in Parliament.” This was announced today, June 25, during the eighth plenary session of the Senate.
The new law introduces amendments and additions to five legislative acts regulating the activities of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis and political parties. Notably, it grants a political party faction that has declared itself the opposition in parliament the additional right to propose an alternative version of a draft law or its individual provisions before the second reading.
The law also guarantees that members of the opposition faction will hold key parliamentary positions, including one committee chairmanship and two deputy committee chairmanships in the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis. Additionally, the faction is granted the right to raise issues within the framework of the “government hour” and submit parliamentary inquiries on a quarterly basis.
At the end of the discussions, senators unanimously approved the law.
It is worth noting that last month, during a plenary session of the Legislative Chamber, Ulugbek Inoyatov, head of the People’s Democratic Party faction, officially declared his party as the opposition in parliament.
