“Samarkand bread” officially patented as a geographical indication

Uzbekistan’s world-famous "Samarkand bread" has been officially registered as a geographical indication, the Ministry of Justice announced.  

The designation, granted on February 4, was made possible through the collaboration of the Samarkand Regional Justice Department and the Intellectual Property Center. On the same day, Minister of Justice Akbar Tashkulov presented the official geographical indication certificate to Adiz Boboyev, the acting governor of the Samarkand region.  

The Ministry of Justice serves as the authorized body for the legal protection of geographical indications in Uzbekistan. Under the Law on Geographical Indications, a product may receive this status if its quality, reputation, or other distinguishing characteristics are directly linked to its place of origin.  

Previously, the Ministry of Justice granted similar registrations for "Gijduvon shashlik" on August 24, 2023, and "Guzor tandoori meat" on January 8, 2024.
