On January 22, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed a document in Davos on Uzbekistan’s accession to the Gaza “Peace Council.” The signing ceremony is being broadcast on the White House’s YouTube channel.
Shavkat Mirziyoyev is currently in Switzerland on a working visit. According to the visit program, the Uzbek leader is taking part in the signing ceremony of the charter of the “Peace Council,” which is being established in Davos at the initiative of U.S. President Donald Trump. Shavkat Mirziyoyev is also expected to hold a number of bilateral meetings.
It should be recalled that earlier reports said a ceremony to sign the charter of the “Peace Council” would take place in Davos. According to the draft charter, Trump will serve as the body’s first chair and will personally make decisions on inviting new members. To obtain permanent membership status, the U.S. administration requires countries to pay contributions of at least $1 billion during the first year.
According to Bloomberg, such financial conditions have surprised many world leaders and prompted sharp criticism. Although the council was initially established to oversee the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, the text of the charter points to broader and more global ambitions for an initiative that could potentially serve as an alternative to the United Nations. Some invited parties have expressed concern that Trump, as chair, could gain sole control over the organization’s funds.
