The term of office of the President may be extended up to 7 years

The term of office of the president of Uzbekistan may be extended from 5 to 7 years.  This is stated in the draft constitutional law “On Amendments and additions to the constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan”, which was presented for public discussion today 25 June.

The document implies the provision of amendments to part 2 of Article 90 of the constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan, namely the replacement of the word “five” with the word “seven”.

For reference, in accordance with Article 90, a citizen of the Republic of Uzbekistan who is at least 35 years of age and who is proficient in the state language and has been a permanent resident in the territory of Uzbekistan for at least 10 years before direct elections, can be elected.  The presidency of the Republic of Uzbekistan is possible. The same person may not be the president of the Republic of Uzbekistan for more than two consecutive terms.

It should be noted that the last time the term of the presidency was changed was in 2011. According to this, the term was reduced from 7 to 5 years.
