In Uzbekistan, it is prohibited to terminate the employment contract on the employer’s initiative because the employee has reached retirement age. This was mentioned yesterday, 15 March, in the decision from President Shavkat Mirziyoyev «On additional measures to provide comprehensive support to the elderly and improve their living standards».

The decision instructs the Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations, together with the relevant ministries and departments, to draft and submit to the Cabinet of Ministers, a bill within two months which prohibits the termination of the employment contract on the employer’s initiative in connection with the retirement age of the employee.

It is also planned to introduce an index of active aging, based on international experience, by 1 September this year.

In addition, the Ministry of the Neighborhood and Elderly Support, based on the principle of «One elder person is responsible for ten youths», has been tasked to develop programs to help unemployed, difficult and troubled young people grow up to be useful people in the community by attaching to them reputable luminaries and intellectuals with life and extensive practical experience in the community.

“Elderly Council” groups will be established in the area of public supervision of citizens' meetings. This will include public monitoring of the provision of medical services to the population in neighborhoods, school attendance, knowledge acquisition, employment rates and other public services.
