14503On October 9, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed a presentation on the construction of a new international airport in Bukhara.
The President’s press service reported the project as part of a broader national effort to modernize Uzbekistan's airports, which has already seen the operation of new airports in Shahrisabz, Kokand, and Zomin this year, along with ongoing upgrades in Namangan and Andijan.
"The introduction of private sector management at Samarkand International Airport has already led to a fivefold increase in flights and passengers, highlighting the potential for similar development in Bukhara," the report states.
However, the current Bukhara airport, with a capacity of 400 passengers per hour and 1 million per year, is insufficient for the growing demand from residents and tourists.
Outdated flight control and passenger service systems have further restricted the airport's ability to handle more flights, forcing most tourists to travel by train or car from other airports.
"With Bukhara's tourism industry expanding rapidly, especially with pilgrimage tourism, plans are in place to increase the annual number of tourists to 8 million in the next three years.
During a visit to the region on May 31, President Mirziyoyev initiated the construction of a new airport in Bukhara, under a public-private partnership. The new facility will accommodate 1,200 passengers per hour and aims to attract more international airlines by improving passenger and aircraft services," the report states.
During the presentation, the President stressed the importance of doubling the airport's capacity, allowing for the handling of 8 planes per hour. He also offered suggestions on improving the design and facilities of the terminal to ensure comfort for passengers.
This review follows the President’s recent involvement in the Tashkent master plan project, which envisions the city's development into three zones: conservation, reconstruction, and renovation.
