President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev today, on November 12, received Khaled al-Anani, who has been elected as Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the presidential press service reported.

The meeting reviewed the outcomes of UNESCO’s 43rd General Conference, held in Samarkand, and discussed prospects for further strengthening cooperation with the organization. At the beginning of the talks, President Mirziyoyev congratulated Al-Anani on his appointment to the high office and wished him success in his future work.

The newly elected Director-General, in turn, expressed his sincere gratitude to the Uzbek president for supporting UNESCO’s flagship event and ensuring its successful organization at the highest level.

It was noted with satisfaction that Uzbekistan and UNESCO have established systematic and productive cooperation covering a wide range of areas. The sides reaffirmed their commitment to further expanding cooperation, including scaling up UNESCO’s project activities in Uzbekistan.

Al-Anani emphasized UNESCO’s readiness to jointly implement the strategic initiatives proposed by the President of Uzbekistan at the opening ceremony of the General Conference.

It is worth noting that on November 6, during the 43rd UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand, Khaled al-Anani (Egypt) was elected as the organization’s new Director-General, receiving 172 out of 174 votes. He will officially assume office on November 15, succeeding Audrey Azoulay, who has served in the role since 2017.
