President Mirziyoyev criticizes Tashkent's drainage system

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has voiced concerns over the inadequate drainage system in Tashkent, directing city authorities to draft a comprehensive master plan for its improvement. During a video selector meeting on October 21, the President discussed the outcomes of the "Green Space" nationwide project and outlined future priorities, highlighting the need for a better drainage system.

The recent heavy rainfall in Tashkent exposed the shortcomings of the current drainage infrastructure. President Mirziyoyev emphasized that mere corrections to the existing system are insufficient. He proposed the construction of artificial basins to collect rainwater, which could then be repurposed for irrigating greenery across the city.

The President instructed district governors to address issues related to drainage, greenery, and beautification by visiting affected areas and implementing necessary solutions. Furthermore, concerns were raised about the increasing prevalence of tree diseases in the capital, prompting a directive for city officials to develop a master plan that integrates both drainage systems and artificial basins by the end of the year.

This is not the first time President Mirziyoyev has raised the issue. On January 29, during a meeting focused on housing, construction, public utilities, transport, and ecology, he noted public dissatisfaction over the drainage system's performance during the rainy season. The city administration was tasked with completing repairs at problematic drainage points and preparing a comprehensive master plan by September 1.

To address immediate concerns, the local budget's reserve fund allocated 846.5 million soums to manage emergencies caused by flooding during heavy rains. This fund is designated for the Specialized Department of Repair and Maintenance of Drainage and Collectors, under the General Department of Improvement of Tashkent City. It aims to cover the cost of necessary equipment and materials to enhance the drainage system's effectiveness.
