Uzbekistan has ratified the agreement establishing an international organization for the Russian language, a move approved by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

The law on the ratification of this agreement was adopted by the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis on October 18, 2024, and subsequently approved by the Senate on October 24. President Mirziyoyev signed the law on October 31.

The initiative to create an international organization for the Russian language was proposed by Kazakh President Kasim-Jomart Tokaev during the summit of CIS heads of state held on October 13, 2023, in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. During the summit, CIS leaders signed a statement supporting and promoting the Russian language as a means of international communication, alongside the agreement to establish the International Russian Language Organization.

Notably, on October 8, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his hope that all CIS countries would ratify the agreement promptly during the CIS Council of Heads of State meeting in Moscow.
