The era of closed borders, unresolved disputes, and conflicts in Central Asia is now a thing of the past. This was stated on September 23 by President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev during his speech at the 80th anniversary session of the United Nations General Assembly.
According to the head of state, Uzbekistan today places special emphasis on the priorities of its foreign policy.
“Eight years ago, from this very rostrum, we declared our firm determination to turn Central Asia into a region of peace, good neighborliness, and partnership. Today, we can say with deep satisfaction that we have achieved this strategic goal. The era of closed borders, unresolved disputes, and conflicts is over,” Mirziyoyev said.
Continuing his speech, the president noted that in recent years, mutual trade, investment, and transport flows within the region have increased fivefold. Joint investment funds, trade and industrial zones are being established in border areas, and major infrastructure projects are being implemented.
“I can say with absolute confidence that today the process of shaping a new Central Asia has begun. With its unity, stability, and unique identity, our region is increasingly establishing itself as an independent actor in the system of international relations,” the head of Uzbekistan emphasized.
Mirziyoyev also proposed launching a number of new projects and programs in partnership with UN agencies. These include holding an international forum on the economic development of Central Asian countries under the auspices of ECOSOC and UNCTAD, establishing a regional hub for green industrial technologies with UNIDO, adopting regional programs for the rational use of water resources, creating a “green” space, and ensuring demographic stability.
In addition, he put forward an initiative to adopt a General Assembly resolution supporting the efforts of Central Asian countries to deepen regional partnership and economic integration.
As a reminder, on the same day, September 23, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev delivered a speech at the 80th anniversary session of the United Nations General Assembly, where he also addressed global challenges and the situations in Afghanistan and Ukraine.
