The term of office for chairmen of citizens' assemblies in Uzbekistan has been extended from 3 to 5 years, according to a new law adopted on February 11.

The law introduces amendments and additions to the legislation "On Citizens' Self-Government Bodies" and "On Elections of the Chairmen of Citizens' Assemblies." Under the new provisions, chairmen of citizens' assemblies will now serve a 5-year term, including those elected to fill vacant positions.

Additionally, the law clarifies the powers of commissions in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, regions, and Tashkent city that assist in organizing and conducting elections for chairmen of citizens' assemblies.

The law takes effect from the date of its official publication. However, chairmen elected before this law comes into force will continue to serve their original 3-year term.
