What is imprisoned Dauletmurat Tajimuratov's, the main organizer of events in Karakalpakstan, condition?

Dauletmurat Tajimuratov, who is considered the main organizer of the demonstrations that took place in Karakalpakstan in July of the current year, and who is currently serving his sentence, has not been tortured during the investigation and his rights have been ensured.  He said this at a meeting with the members of the independent commission of inquiry into the events in Karakalpakstan, according to the Ombudsman.

According to the report on the website of the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Oliy Majlis (Parliament), the members of the independent commission went to the pre-trial detention center of 11 Urgench, Khorezm province, and checked the living conditions and food of the detainees, their access to health care and had a short meeting with lawyers and relatives.

The commission also met with Dauletmurat Tajimuratov, who was detained for committing a crime under the situations and events that took place.  During the meeting, D.Tajimuratov stated that he was provided with a lawyer and that there was no objection to his meeting with him, that he had met briefly with family members, and that he received relatives and packages.

“According to Tajimuratov, he was not tortured, pressured, or harassed during the investigation or in the pre-trial detention center.  He stated that he had no objection to the quality of the food and other conditions in the detention facility.

During the visit, the members of the commission testified that the rights of the suspects were not violated during their detention in the remand center and during the investigative actions, mental and physical torture were not allowed”, - the Ombudsman said.

It should be recalled that on 1 and 2 July of the current year, in the city of Nukus of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, some citizens, having misinterpreted the constitutional reforms underway in the Republic of Uzbekistan, organized unexpected demonstrations.

The Supreme Council of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Karakalpakstan assessed the situation as an attempt to seize the state administration in Nukus.

After that, on 2 July, the president of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev arrived in Karakalpakstan and talked with the Karakalpak people.

In addition, taking into account that the discussion of the changes and additions to the Constitution is still ongoing, and after considering the opinions and comments expressed by the people of Karakalpakstan, the president approved that the articles 70, 71, 72, 74, 75 of the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan in their current version, should remain unchanged.

On 4 July, the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis (Parliament) of Uzbekistan adopted a decision not to amend the articles of the Constitution relating to Karakalpakstan.

During the incidents, 516 people were arrested, 243 injured and 18 killed.  The case was opened under article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan (infringement of the constitutional order of the Republic of Uzbekistan), part 4 – “Conspiracy to seize government or overthrow the constitutional order of the Republic of Uzbekistan.”  The court’s decision detained D.M.Tajimuratov and A.T.Turdanov.
