Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is set to make an official visit to Uzbekistan on April 25–26, 2025. This was announced by the press service of the Italian government.

The official itinerary specifies Samarkand as the destination for the visit.

On July 8, 2023, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev made an official visit to Italy, during which he held talks with Prime Minister Meloni at the Palazzo Chigi in Rome. Later that year, in November, Italian President Sergio Mattarella, accompanied by his daughter Laura Mattarella, visited Uzbekistan, including a trip to Samarkand.

Earlier this year, on April 3–4, Samarkand hosted the inaugural Central Asia–European Union Summit. The event brought together leaders from Central Asian countries, European Council President António Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development President Odile Renaud-Basso. The summit elevated relations between the EU and Central Asia to the level of a strategic partnership.
