3574The 2024 parliamentary elections in Uzbekistan are being held under a new structure and format. On September 20, the Central Election Commission (CEC) completed the registration of candidates for the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis.
This year’s elections will follow a mixed electoral system, combining majoritarian and proportional representation. Of the 150 deputies in the Legislative Chamber, 75 will be directly elected by voters in single-member constituencies. The remaining 75 seats will be filled based on party lists, in proportion to the votes each political party receives in a single electoral district.
The electoral process has also been modernized. A new "E-election" interactive portal was launched to facilitate the efficient and legally compliant registration of party candidates.
At the CEC meeting, all candidates nominated by political parties for the Legislative Chamber were officially registered, with the campaign period set to begin on September 22.
This year's elections will see 875 candidates compete for seats in the Legislative Chamber. Notably, 44.2% of the candidates are under the age of 45, with the youngest candidate being just 25 years old. This highlights the growing involvement of youth in the political process, creating a balance between young and experienced politicians.
For the first time in Uzbekistan's electoral history, five political parties have successfully nominated candidates for 100% of all deputy positions.
The CEC has also ensured equal campaign opportunities by allocating special broadcasting times and publication spaces for all candidates, promoting transparency and fairness in the election process, and giving voters full access to information about the candidates and their programs.
