The President of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, internationally renowned and recognized scientist in the field of high-energy physics, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor, and Academician Behzod Sadiqovich Yoldoshev, passed away today, August 28, at the age of 79. This was reported by the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Behzod Yoldoshev was born on May 9, 1945, in Tashkent. 1968 he graduated with honors from the Faculty of Nuclear Physics of Tashkent State University. In 1971, he defended his thesis at the United Institute of Nuclear Research (Dubna), and in 1981, he defended his doctoral thesis in physics and mathematics. He served as a junior researcher at the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, senior researcher at the Institute of Physics and Technology, head of the laboratory, and director of the Institute of Nuclear Physics (1990-2006, 2017-2020). He also held the position of President of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan (2000-2005) and since 2017. Additionally, he worked as a scientific advisor to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA, Vienna, Austria) and as the chief scientist of the United Nuclear Research Institute (Dubna).

He conducted research as an invited professor at Washington and Stanford universities (USA) and the United Nuclear Research Institute (Dubna, Russia), and served as the head of the Department of Nuclear Physics at Tashkent State University (1995-2000).

He was the spokesperson for two scientific experiments conducted by an international team of researchers at Fermilab (USA) and TRIUMF (Vancouver, Canada). Currently, he is involved in research at the Large Hadron Collider of the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN, Geneva, Switzerland) and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research.

He led large-scale projects related to the development of practical solutions for strengthening nuclear security and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.

From 1990-2006 and 2017-2020, he served as the director of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

His main scientific and organizational activities encompassed issues such as elementary particle physics, nuclear physics, and the application of nuclear technologies in industry, agriculture, and medicine.

He authored more than 400 scientific works, including 3 monographs and over 20 inventions. Under his scientific supervision, he trained 9 doctors of science and approximately 30 candidates of science.

Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan (2000), corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan (1994), Doctor of Physics and Mathematics (1981), Professor (1987). He was a laureate of the State Prize of the former Uzbek SSR named after Beruni (1983) and a laureate of the International ESO Prize (2004). He was a member of the American Physical Society, an honorary doctor (fellow) of Indiana, Washington (USA), and Cambridge (Great Britain) universities, an academician of the Islamic World Academy (IAS), an honorary doctor of the United Nuclear Research Institute (OIYAI, Dubna, Russia), an international academician of the Association of Academies of Sciences (MAAN), a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan, and a member of the Higher Attestation Commission under the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia (1995-2005, from 2019 to present). He also served as a Senator of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan (2001-2005, from 2020 to present).

He was awarded the "Labour Fame" and "For Selfless Services" orders. He held the honorary title of "Scientist" of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Republic of Karakalpakstan.
