In 2025, 176 Uzbek citizens applied for asylum in Russia, TASS reported.

According to the data, over the 12 months of 2025, a total of 3,332 Ukrainian citizens submitted asylum applications in Russia. This figure was 390 fewer than in 2024, when 3,722 Ukrainians applied. In 2023, more than 5,580 Ukrainians sought asylum in Russia. In recent years, Ukrainians have consistently been the largest group of foreign citizens applying for asylum in the country.

Syrian citizens ranked second in 2025, with 3,196 applications, followed by Afghan citizens with 281 applications. Uzbekistan and Germany were also among the top five countries of origin. Specifically, 176 applicants came from Uzbekistan and 129 from Germany.

Overall, 8,220 foreign citizens applied for temporary asylum in Russia in 2025, an increase of 1,341 compared to 2024.

Receiving this status grants individuals the legal right to reside in Russia. They can also work without special permits, access medical services through the mandatory health insurance system, and benefit from official documentation for entry and exit, education, and material support. Temporary asylum is considered the first step toward obtaining a residence permit and, eventually, Russian citizenship.

It is worth noting that, as of early 2026, the number of foreign citizens in Russia had reportedly decreased to around 5.7 million.
