17469In recent anti-corruption operations conducted by Uzbekistan's State Security Service, several local officials, including deputy mayors and assistants, were apprehended for accepting bribes across Kashkadarya, Navoi, Andijan, and Syrdarya regions.
In Kashkadarya, the deputy mayor of Dehqonabad district was arrested after receiving a $5,000 bribe to sign an acceptance document for a facility in Karashina. The head specialist of a state engineering company was also caught for attempting to cover up deficiencies in the project.
Similarly, in Navoi, the head of a private LLC was caught after receiving 20 million soums in exchange for facilitating a 100 million soum preferential loan.
His associate, an assistant mayor previously convicted of corruption, received an additional 10 million soums, while a bank specialist involved in preparing the loan documents accepted 2 million soums. Criminal charges are now underway for all individuals under Articles 168 and 211 of the Criminal Code.
In Andijan, an assistant mayor in Shahrikhan district exploited his position to demand 9 million soums from a citizen seeking a preferential loan. He was arrested with physical evidence, and now faces charges under Articles 168 and 214 of the Criminal Code.
In Syrdarya, the deputy governor of Khavos district attempted to extort $20,000 from a local agricultural company to prevent its land from being taken into government reserve, accepting an initial $1,000 payment. The Sardoba District Court sentenced him to seven years in prison.
These cases underscore ongoing efforts in Uzbekistan to combat corruption and ensure transparency in public office.
