On January 12, Uzbekistan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Bakhtiyor Saidov received the credentials of Eric De Meyer, the newly appointed Ambassador of Belgium to Uzbekistan. Saidov announced this on his Telegram channel.

According to the minister, the meeting included a broad discussion of bilateral relations. The sides emphasized the importance of further developing cooperation in trade, investment, and business, as well as expanding practical economic ties between Uzbekistan and Belgium.

“We wish the ambassador success in his activities in our country,” Saidov said.

Earlier, Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Prévot announced that Belgium plans to open an embassy in Tashkent. He noted that Central Asia offers significant strategic opportunities, particularly through the development of the Trans-Caspian Corridor, also referred to as the “new Silk Road.”

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Kingdom of Belgium were established on March 10, 1992. Uzbekistan opened its first embassy in Belgium in June 1995. Until now, Belgium had an embassy in Central Asia only in Astana, Kazakhstan, while a honorary consulate has been operating in Tashkent.
