19916Bahadir Nizomovich Kurbanov, the Minister of Defense of Uzbekistan, has been appointed as the new chairman of the State Security Service, according to sources from QALAMPIR.UZ.
Kurbanov has served as the Minister of Defense since February 11, 2019, and brings a wealth of experience from his distinguished career in law enforcement and defense.
Born in 1969 in the Jizzakh region, Kurbanov began his career in law enforcement after graduating from the Higher Investigative School of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in 1990 and the Higher School of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in 1992.
His career milestones include: 1994-1996: Investigator and senior investigator in the investigative department of the Internal Affairs Office in Jizzakh, 1996-1999: Various operational roles in the Anti-Corruption, Racketeering, and Terrorism Department, 1999: Deputy head of the 3rd Department of the Regional Internal Affairs Bureau for combating corruption and terrorism, 2002-2005: Head of the Jizzakh district IAO and later head of the Gallaorol district Internal Affairs Department, 2008: Head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Namangan region after serving as the first deputy head of the Main Department of the Patrol Service, 2013-2015: Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, 2015: Head of the Tashkent City Internal Affairs Department, Kurbanov was promoted to the rank of Major General on January 14, 2017, and later served as the commander of the Tashkent Military District from February 12, 2018, to February 11, 2019.
This appointment follows the dismissal of Lieutenant General Abdusalam Azizov from his post as head of the State Security Service.
Kurbanov's extensive background in internal affairs and military leadership positions him as a strong candidate to lead Uzbekistan's SSS during a time of increasing focus on national security.
