2512Uzbekistan’s electricity demand is set to rise significantly, reaching 117 billion kilowatt-hours by 2030 and 135 billion kilowatt-hours by 2035—1.7 times the current consumption. This projection was announced on January 28 during a meeting on the development of Uzbekistan’s electric power industry for 2025–2035, chaired by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
Over the past eight years, electricity production in Uzbekistan has increased by 38%, reaching 81.5 billion kilowatt-hours. The expansion of the private sector has contributed 11.2 gigawatts of additional capacity, increasing its share in total electricity generation to 24%. Meanwhile, the contribution of renewable energy has reached 16%.
Rising household demand has also played a role in this growth. As the country’s population income increased by 1.6 times and the adoption of modern household appliances expanded, residential electricity consumption exceeded 21 billion kilowatt-hours—twice the level recorded in 2016.
By 2030, Uzbekistan’s population is expected to reach 41 million, with the economy projected to expand 1.5 times. To support this growth, the country plans to generate $45 billion in added value within the industrial sector, triple the volume of services, and launch large-scale data centers. Ensuring a stable electricity supply will be critical to achieving these goals.
At the meeting, the Minister of Energy presented a long-term strategy to meet the country’s rising energy needs.
"As outlined in the plan, new power plants and energy storage facilities will be constructed. To integrate them into the national grid, 7,000 kilometers of new transmission lines will be built, alongside the implementation of digital energy management systems," the report stated.
These developments will ensure a balanced energy distribution across regions. In cases of localized electricity shortages, additional capacity from other regions will be activated to stabilize supply.
To support these initiatives, $4 billion will be invested in Uzbekistan’s National Electric Grids over the next five years.
With these efforts, Uzbekistan aims to surpass 50% renewable energy generation by 2030, positioning itself as a regional leader in sustainable energy development.
Reducing electricity costs is another key priority for Uzbekistan, driven by the increasing adoption of alternative energy sources. According to foreign experts, Uzbekistan has significant potential for expanding its renewable energy sector. Based on this, the government aims to raise the share of green energy in total electricity generation to over 50% by 2030.To achieve this goal, the country plans to commission 3,000 micro hydroelectric power plants with a combined capacity of 164 megawatts, alongside 750 megawatts of solar and wind energy installations.
On January 28, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev emphasized the urgent need to transition to a resource-efficient economic model. Notably, energy efficiency improvements in industry could generate an additional 27% of GDP. Currently, energy consumption at certain chemical and metallurgical enterprises in Uzbekistan is twice the global average, while the cement production sector consumes 1.2 times more energy than international standards. To address this, the government has set a target to reduce energy use by 10–15% across all industries and lower electricity losses from 14% to 8–9% by 2030.
"Uzbekistan is actively working with foreign investors on 24 major energy projects valued at $26 billion, which will contribute an additional 24 gigawatts of capacity. These projects will require a substantial amount of equipment and construction materials, creating new opportunities for domestic enterprises to participate in localization and industrial cooperation, the report stated.
Additionally, authorities have been tasked with ensuring a stable and uninterrupted electricity supply for consumers and expanding workforce training programs in the energy sector. Taking all these factors into account, the government has instructed the preparation of a comprehensive electricity sector development program through 2035.
With these strategic initiatives, Uzbekistan is poised to strengthen its position as a regional leader in renewable energy and industrial efficiency.
