26754In 2024, a total of 483 bodies of Uzbek nationals were repatriated from abroad, according to a press conference held on January 17 at the Agency for Information and Mass Communications. The event was attended by officials from the Migration Agency under the Cabinet of Ministers.
"The cost of repatriating a body varies by country. For example, bringing the body of one Uzbek from Russia costs up to $1,000. Repatriating remains from the UK to Uzbekistan ranges from $4,000 to $5,000, while transporting bodies from Japan or South Korea can cost between $9,000 and $10,000,” said an official from the agency.
An official from the Migration Agency noted that the legal status of the migrant, whether they were abroad legally or illegally, does not affect the agency's ability to assist in bringing back the bodies. Any Uzbek citizen in need of assistance can contact the Migration Agency for support.
For comparison, in 2022, the bodies of 518 Uzbeks working abroad were repatriated, and in 2021, over 500 bodies were brought back. Additionally, on April 20, 2020, the Agency for Foreign Labor Migration facilitated the return of 17 Uzbeks who had died in various accidents in the Russian Federation.
