7589A person who attempted to smuggle 50,000 US dollars out of Uzbekistan through the "Olot" border customs post was apprehended. This was reported by the Customs Department of Bukhara Region.
On September 25 of this year, a pedestrian citizen entering the "Olot" border customs post of the Bukhara Region Customs Department underwent customs control as part of the routine procedure. Initially, the citizen declared 5,000 US dollars and 38 million sums of national currency at the verbal request of the customs officer. However, when the cash was recalculated, it was discovered that the amount declared as 5,000 US dollars was actually 10,000 US dollars, and the national currency totaled 61,580,000 sums, not 38 million.
"This situation indicated the citizen’s intention to bypass customs control, raising the suspicions of customs officials. Upon further inspection, it was confirmed that the citizen had concealed an additional 20,000 US dollars under his shoes and another 10,000 US dollars in his side pockets," the report stated.
Documents were properly filed regarding the incident, and a total of 50,000 US dollars and 61,580,000 sums in national currency were temporarily confiscated until the situation is fully clarified.
For reference, individuals are allowed to take out the equivalent of up to 100 million sums from Uzbekistan through a passenger's customs declaration. To withdraw amounts exceeding this limit, the appropriate permits are required.
