Uzbek tennis players begin Wimbledon campaign

Tennis players representing Uzbekistan competed in the first round of Wimbledon, one of the Grand Slam tournaments. By the end of the day, they recorded two wins and one defeat.

The country’s top-ranked player, Kamilla Rakhimova, showed great resilience to defeat Ukraine’s Anna Kalinina, the world No. 66. Although Rakhimova lost the first set 4-6, she displayed a high level of play in the next two sets and won 6-4, 7-5.

Another Uzbek tennis player, Maria Timofeeva, also made a successful start. She defeated experienced Brazilian player Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-3, 6-2 to secure a place in the second round.

This victory became one of the most important achievements of Maria’s career. Her opponent, Beatriz Haddad Maia, is a former world No. 10 and the first female tennis player in Brazilian history to enter the top 10 of the WTA rankings. During her career, she has also won four WTA singles titles and eight doubles titles.

With these victories, Rakhimova and Timofeeva not only advanced to the second round, but also guaranteed themselves 70 WTA ranking points and £126,000, approximately $166,000, in prize money.

Polina Kudermetova, meanwhile, faced one of the world’s strongest players, Russia’s Lyudmila Samsonova, in the first round. Samsonova won the match 6-3, 6-3 and advanced to the next stage. Thus, the season’s third Grand Slam tournament also came to an end for Polina Kudermetova.
