Central Asian countries agreed on water distribution

Central Asian nations reached an agreement on the distribution of water resources, specifically from the Amudarya and Syrdarya rivers for the summer of 2024. This consensus was reached during the 86th session of the Water Management Coordinating Commission of the Central Asian States, convened in Kazakhstan.

A primary focus of the meeting was to endorse water intake quotas for each country and to establish operational strategies for reservoir cascades during the 2024 growing season in the Syrdarya and Amudarya river basins.

Currently, the Central Asian Interstate Coordinating Water Commission's website lacks data regarding the volume of water utilized for irrigation across the region and the amount replenished into the Aral Sea.

The annual water extraction limit from the Amudarya basin stands at 56 billion cubic meters, with approximately 40 billion cubic meters allocated for the growing season between April and October.

Under this agreement, Tajikistan received 6.9 billion cubic meters, Uzbekistan received 16 billion cubic meters, and Turkmenistan received 15.5 billion cubic meters during the growing season.
