Seventeen pieces of gold jewelry were discovered in the handbag of a citizen who entered Karakalpakstan from Kazakhstan, according to the Karakalpakstan Customs Department.

Officials from the department’s Anti-Smuggling Unit conducted an inspection of a passenger's handbag in the 9th carriage of train No. 652, which was traveling along the Beinyu–Nukus route. The inspection took place at the Karakalpakstan railway border customs post, in the presence of witnesses.

As a result, it was found that the passenger was attempting to smuggle 17 pieces of gold jewelry of six different types, weighing a total of 79.50 grams. The individual had not declared the items during an oral inquiry, had omitted them from the customs declaration, and was carrying no official documentation for the goods.

For reference, when traveling by rail, citizens are allowed to import goods valued at up to $500 into Uzbekistan duty-free. Customs duties apply to goods exceeding this value.

It should be noted that a similar incident occurred earlier at Tashkent International Airport, where individuals attempting to smuggle jewelry worth 1 billion soums were intercepted.
