Academician Galina Matviyevskaya, expert in the history of science, passes away at 94

Galina Pavlovna Matviyevskaya, Full Member of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, and Professor, has passed away at the age of 94 in Orenburg, Russia. The Academy's press service confirmed the news.

Born on July 13, 1930, in the city of Dnieper (now Ukraine), Matviyevskaya graduated from the Faculty of Mathematical Mechanics at Leningrad University in 1954. In 1959, she defended her candidate's thesis at the Institute of the History of Sciences of the USSR Academy of Sciences (now the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences and the Russian Academy of Technical Sciences). The same year, she was invited to join the V.I. Romanovsky Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, where she focused on research related to the history of science in the medieval East. In 1968, she successfully defended her doctoral thesis under the guidance of Academician S. Kh. Sirojiddinov.

Matviyevskaya, alongside B.A. Rosenfeld, compiled a catalog of Arabic manuscripts on mathematics and astronomy from global collections. She also contributed significantly to the study of mathematical manuscripts at the Abu Rayhan Beruni Institute of Oriental Studies of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan.

Throughout her career, Matviyevskaya made valuable contributions to the study of prominent scientists like Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi, Abu Rayhan Beruni, Shamsiddin Samarkand, Mirzo Ulugbek, Qazizoda Rumi, and Jamshid Koshi. In recognition of her work, she received the State Prize of Uzbekistan in 1974 and the honorary title of "Honored Scientist of the Republic of Uzbekistan" in 1980. She was elected a corresponding member of the Academy in 1984 and a full member in 2000.

Fluent in Latin, English, German, French, and Arabic, Matviyevskaya was also recognized by UNESCO as a leading expert in the history of natural sciences. She was elected a full member of the International Academy of the History of Sciences.

Her passing follows the death of another prominent figure, Academician Behzod Sodiqovich Yuldoshev, President of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, who passed away at 79 on August 28, 2024. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited Yuldoshev's family to express his condolences.
