K.M., the former chairman of the Denov District Criminal Court in Surkhandarya region, has been sentenced to five years in prison for causing a fatal car accident while driving under the influence. This was reported by the Supreme Court of Uzbekistan.
The incident occurred on March 9 last year, when K.M. was involved in a car crash while driving with a lawyer friend. The lawyer sustained serious injuries and died at the scene.
The case was heard by the criminal panel of the Kashkadarya Regional Court.
According to the verdict, K.M. was found guilty under Part 2 of Article 266 of the Criminal Code—violating traffic safety rules while operating a vehicle under aggravating circumstances. He was sentenced to five years in prison and banned from driving for three years. The sentence is to be served in a correctional colony.
The Supreme Court noted that the involved parties have the right to file an appeal or cassation complaint against the verdict with the judicial panel for criminal cases of the Kashkadarya Regional Court, in accordance with the procedures and deadlines established by law.
For context, K.M. had been appointed chairman of the Denov District Criminal Court for a five-year term in April 2021. However, his powers were terminated early on May 15, 2024, following the results of a service inspection.
Earlier, it was also reported that a judge of the Mirabad District Criminal Court in Tashkent had stolen a car while intoxicated. He was later dismissed from his post and stripped of his judicial authority.
