Von der Leyen highlights millennia-old ties at Samarkand Summit opening

3990The first “Central Asia – European Union” summit officially began today, April 4, 2025, in Samarkand. The opening ceremony featured significant statements by European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, which further underscored the strategic importance of the summit.
António Costa expressed the EU’s commitment to efforts for peace in Ukraine and the intention to contribute to global stability together with Central Asian countries. He emphasized that Europe and Central Asia could jointly lead peace initiatives not only economically but also geopolitically.
Ursula von der Leyen announced the beginning of a “new era of strategic partnership” between Europe, Central Asia, and Uzbekistan.
“We Europeans want to stand with you in this new era of your millennia-old history,” she said.
Von der Leyen outlined the following key priorities for the EU's collaboration with Central Asian countries:
- Transport Corridors: The EU is ready to support the development of Trans-Caspian transport routes, particularly those passing through Uzbekistan.
- Critical Raw Materials: The EU plans to invest in projects for extracting, processing, and training specialists in Central Asia’s mineral resources.
- Green Energy: The EU will finance projects in clean energy, including wind, solar, and hydropower.
- Global Digital Infrastructure: The EU aims to promote digital sovereignty in Central Asia by establishing independent internet networks, including satellite internet.
During the summit, a joint declaration on critical raw materials between the EU and Central Asian countries is planned to be signed. This document will ensure the sustainable utilization of regional resources and stable supplies to European markets.
The Samarkand Summit is opening a new chapter in relations between Europe and Central Asia. The EU’s practical proposals and strategic approaches, aligned with Uzbekistan’s policy of openness and cooperation, lay a strong foundation for sustainable development, digital progress, and energy security in the region.
