Uzbek who fought with the “Wagner” group receives his verdict

A 26-year-old Uzbek man, who went to Russia for work and later joined the "Wagner" group to fight against Ukraine, has been sentenced. Aziz Obidov, the Supreme Court spokesman, informed QALAMPIR.UZ about the details.

Citizen Sh.Y. traveled to Russia in 2019 for employment. While working in Moscow, he became involved in narcotics trafficking and was apprehended by law enforcement. On September 30, 2021, the Obninsk City Court in the Kaluga Region of Russia convicted him under the relevant Russian Criminal Code articles and sentenced him to 7 years in prison.

During his imprisonment, Sh.Y. was recruited by the Russian military and served from October 22, 2022, to April 22, 2023, with the private military company "Wagner." He received the "Za otvagu" badge for his service.

On May 30, his case was reviewed in the Ohangaron city court, where he was found guilty of the crime outlined in Part 1 of Article 154 (Recruitment) of the Criminal Code of Uzbekistan. He was sentenced to 2 years and 6 months of correctional labor, with 20 percent of his monthly salary to be deducted for the state income account.
