Uzbek doctors have successfully separated conjoined twins through an emergency surgical operation, the Ministry of Health reported.
According to the ministry, the rare and complex procedure was carried out at the Tashkent Regional Branch of the Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center for Maternal and Child Health, located in the city of Chirchik. The twins, born prematurely by cesarean section at 33–34 weeks of pregnancy, were separated nine hours after birth in a highly complicated operation performed under local conditions.
“The five-hour, high-tech surgery was conducted by a team of qualified specialists led by the head of the Neonatal Surgery Center under the Republican Perinatal Center, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Bakhtiyor Ergashev,” the report stated.
On October 8, Minister of Health Asilbek Khudoyorov was briefed on the babies’ condition.
“Such extremely complex operations are not performed in all countries. Even in nations with advanced medical systems, they usually take place after long-term analysis and extensive preparation. This is an extremely rare procedure. The successful emergency separation of prematurely born conjoined twins at the regional level is clear evidence that our country’s healthcare has reached a new stage of development,” the Minister noted.
It is worth noting that the specialists involved in the surgery were awarded the “Excellence in Healthcare of the Republic of Uzbekistan” badge by the Minister. The babies and their mother, whose health has improved, were discharged from the hospital today.
