The number of senators is changing from the current amount of 100 to 65.  The current procedure for forming the Senate will be preserved.  Today, on 9 March, at the plenary session of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis (Parliament), MP Jakhongir Shirinov said this while explaining the draft of the constitutional law of the Republic of Uzbekistan "On the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan".

The law is scheduled to be reviewed by the Senate within sixty days.  If the Senate does not make a decision on approving or rejecting the law within sixty days, it is envisaged that the law will be sent to the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan for signing and the promulgation by the Legislative Chamber.

Joint powers of the chambers of the Oliy Majlis have also been strengthened, and the institution of parliamentary inspection, which is an important form of parliamentary control, is being separately strengthened in the Constitution.

Also, such important powers as hearing the annual national report on the fight against corruption in Uzbekistan, determining the maximum amount of the state debt, and carrying out the parliamentary audit are included in the joint powers of the chambers.

"We believe that this will create a solid foundation for positive changes in the fight against corruption while ensuring the effective cooperation of both Chambers in this direction," MP Shirinov says.

According to him, the Oliy Majlis at the current convocation is determined to carry out its activities in accordance with the mandates specified in the updated Constitution, taking into account the moment when this Constitution comes into force.

The new norms determining the number of members of the Senate are expected to be implemented in 2024 from the moment of the formation of the Senate of the next convocation.
