Meningitis cases rise in Uzbekistan, mostly affecting children – Sanitary Committee

Cases of meningococcal infection have increased in Uzbekistan since the beginning of the year, with most patients being children, the Sanitary and Epidemiological Committee reported.

According to the committee, 174 cases of meningococcal infection have been recorded, 168 of which involve children.

In its statement, the committee noted a slight increase in meningococcal infections among the population in 2026. In response, 8,024 doses of vaccine have been procured to prevent the spread of the infection, particularly among children. A total of 4,862 people who had contact with infected patients have been vaccinated. Individuals who had contact with patients but have medical contraindications to vaccination are receiving chemoprophylaxis under medical supervision.

“In the first quarter of 2026, 174 cases of meningococcal infection were registered in the country, of which 168 involved children under the age of 14. According to disease trends, a 14% decrease was observed in April compared to March,” the statement said.

For reference, Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, often caused by bacteria or viruses, and can develop rapidly, making it potentially life-threatening.

Preventive measures include timely vaccination, maintaining personal hygiene, seeking medical attention promptly if symptoms appear, and taking precautions in public places.

Authorities also recommend vaccination against meningococcal infection before undertaking Hajj or Umrah, and limiting participation in mass gatherings after returning from pilgrimage.

According to the committee, comprehensive measures are being implemented nationwide to maintain a stable epidemiological situation. The public is urged to rely on official sources for accurate information about the current situation and response measures.
