Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan sign a historic agreement on the Amudarya

The talks between the president of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev and the president of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdymukhamedov continued in an expanded format with the participation of the official delegations of the two countries.

During the negotiations, it was emphasized that the historical roots and unity of religion, language, culture and traditions of the two countries serve as a solid basis of Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan cooperation.

"We accept the state visit of the president of Turkmenistan as a clear confirmation that the centuries-old friendship and good neighborly ties between our peoples are unbreakable, and the desire to strengthen bilateral relations continues," -  said Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

It was noted that strengthening cooperation with Turkmenistan is an undoubted priority of Uzbekistan's foreign policy.

"I am sure that today's negotiations will play an important role in the further development of large-scale cooperation, strengthen the strategic partnership of our brother countries and bring it to a new level in terms of quality,"- said the President of Uzbekistan.

It was noted with satisfaction that the two countries have all the opportunities to maintain the positive pace of trade and double its volume in the coming years.

It is noted that the decisions taken on the opening of trade houses in the border trade area of Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan and in the capitals serve this purpose.

The parties highly appreciated that relations in the chemical industry have risen to the level of strategic partnership.  It is planned to expand cooperation in the automotive industry, electrical engineering, textiles and pharmaceuticals, food industry and agriculture.

It is noted that for this purpose, the medium-term trade-economic cooperation and industrial cooperation development program will be adopted.  In addition, a joint project office will be established to promote the most promising projects.

More attention is paid to the development of cooperation in the field of transport. The volume of freight transport increased by 17% last year and this trend continues this year. The parties expressed interest in creating favorable conditions for the effective use of the unique transit potential of the countries of the region, including the provision of mutual benefits and discounts for the transportation of goods”, - said the press service of the President’s Office.

The Heads of State emphasized cooperation in the water and energy sphere and stressed that the Intergovernmental Commission on Water Management was working successfully.  Shavkat Mirziyoyev noted with satisfaction the signing of the historic Amudarya agreement, which will serve the rational use of water resources of the region.

It was also added that Uzbekistan is interested in expanding cooperation in the field of energy, including the purchase of electricity, gas and petroleum products from Turkmenistan.

The Turkmen side expressed its interest in diversifying and increasing trade turnover and developing industrial cooperation.

Among specific industries with great potential of our countries we would like to mention agro-industrial complex, energy, chemistry and petrochemistry, mechanical engineering, textiles and pharmaceuticals.  There are important opportunities for expanding partnerships between business dioramas.  In the following years, relations between the border regions intensified.  We intend to continue and expand cooperation with Uzbekistan”, - said the president of Turkmenistan.

As a result of the talks, the heads of State instructed the two governments to ensure the unconditional implementation of the agreements reached and to provide monthly information on their implementation.
