Foreign debt of Uzbekistan sets a new record

In 2021, Uzbekistan’s gross foreign debt exceeded $40 billion for the first time and amounted to $41.6 billion. This was stated in the commentary on macroeconomic index for 2021, published by the Ministry of Finance.

It was noted that last year, Uzbekistan’s gross external debt (including the percentages of obligations on all domestic and external liabilities of the country) amounted to 41.6 billion dollars. Compared to 2020, the debt has increased by 12.7%.

The ratio of gross external debt to GDP was 60.1%. External debt itself increased from $21.1 billion to $23.4 billion.

Previously, as of 1 January of the current year, public debt balance stood at $26.3 billion.

For reference, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev stated that Uzbekistan’s foreign debt is within the limits of the law and is used for the concrete purposes.
