The tram system in Tashkent, which ceased operations in 2016, will be reintroduced. This was revealed by journalist Aziza Qurbonova on her Telegram channel during the signing ceremony of interdepartmental documents at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

It was reported that Sharof Rahmonov, the Deputy Mayor of Tashkent, and Laurent Saint-Martin, France's Minister-Delegate for Foreign Trade and Affairs concerning Citizens Abroad, signed the roadmap for implementing the tram system.

This announcement was made during an official ceremony at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

For reference, on May 2, 2016, Tashkent’s tram system, Central Asia’s oldest and largest light rail transport network, was decommissioned. Officials had attributed this decision to the increasing number of transport vehicles and the inefficiency of tram routes.

As a reminder, on February 10, 2022, during a visit to Samarkand, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced plans to bring trams back to Tashkent. Later, on November 22, 2022, Uzbekistan and France signed a “roadmap” in Paris for implementing the Tashkent tram system project. The document was signed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Investments and Foreign Trade Jamshid Khodjayev and his French counterpart, Olivier Becht.
