Crime rates rise among students in Tashkent: Top offending universities named

In the first quarter of 2025, a total of 460 crimes were committed by students in the capital. This was announced on April 29 by the Tashkent City Prosecutor's Office during an expanded meeting dedicated to youth-related issues in educational institutions, including student discipline, moral education, and crime prevention.

According to data presented by the Prosecutor’s Office, crime among young people and students has significantly increased compared to the previous year. In the first quarter of 2025, 460 crimes were committed by youth in the capital—an increase of 39.8 percent compared to the same period in 2024, when the figure stood at 329. Among students specifically, this number rose by 7.8 percent.

The list of higher education institutions in Tashkent whose students committed the highest number of crimes was also revealed.

Among state universities:
- 1st place: Tashkent State Transport University – 27 students  
- 2nd place: Tashkent State Technical University – 21 students  
- 3rd place: National University of Uzbekistan – 20 students  
- 4th place: Tashkent State University of Economics – 19 students  
- 5th place: Tashkent State University of Law – 12 students  

Among non-state universities:
- 1st place: ISFT – 23 students  
- 2nd place: Alfraganus University – 20 students  
- 3rd place: International University of Chemistry – 19 students  

During the same meeting, the Tashkent City Prosecutor’s Office also disclosed the types of crimes most frequently committed by university students in the capital. These include:

- Road traffic accidents – 72 cases  
- Theft – 57 cases  
- Drug addiction – 46 cases  
- Bodily injuries – 41 cases  
- Hooliganism – 24 cases  
- Assault – 11 cases  
- Murder – 5 cases  
- Robbery – 5 cases  
- Indecent assault – 2 cases  
- Other – 48 cases  

It is worth recalling that earlier reports indicated 4,764 individuals were sentenced to imprisonment in Uzbekistan during the first quarter of this year.
