The head of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Davron Vahobov, endorsed the proposal to impose duties on the import of electric cars. He discussed this matter yesterday, August 1, at a roundtable discussion with businessmen.

The chairman highlighted the duty rates in other countries for the import of electric cars. According to him, the US has imposed a 102.5 percent tariff on electric cars imported from China due to the absence of an official dealer and non-compliance. In European countries, this rate is 38.1%, in Turkey 58%, in Brazil 10%, and it is set to increase to 35% in 2026.

Furthermore, BYD decided to build a $1 billion factory in Turkey after China imposed additional tariffs ranging from 10 percent to 50 percent on electric vehicles. According to the head of the Chamber of Commerce, the automobile industry lays the foundation for the development of qualified personnel in the country. Vahobov emphasized that this is not related to job vacancies or monopolies but is crucial for producing skilled specialists in the auto industry.

Davron Vahobov stated that zero tariff rates would lead to the mass importation of Chinese electric cars without warranties, resulting in high costs for consumers due to the lack of quality service and adaptation to local conditions.

"I urge you to consider the broader implications of supporting local manufacturers. Our country produced 430,000 cars, Turkey produced 1,100,000 cars with only five brands. The tax amounts to 100% of the market value of the car. Is Turkey a country behind us if it protects its market this way? Additionally, there's a 37 percent luxury tax. For this reason, I fully support the issue raised by our businessman at the previous meeting because if this industry develops, thousands of producers will also develop," he said.

Vahobov also emphasized the growing urgency of battery recycling worldwide. According to him, there are currently no projects in this direction in Uzbekistan. He stated that it is necessary to equalize fees for electric cars with hybrid cars, create funds for battery recycling projects, and attract new technologies.
