On March 13, the second leg of the UEFA Europa League Round of 16 took place, where Roma suffered a 3-1 defeat against Athletic Bilbao, ending their campaign in the tournament.

Uzbek striker Eldor Shomurodov entered the match in the second half, but the game had already taken a decisive turn. In the 11th minute, Roma’s Mats Hummels was shown a red card, leaving the visitors with ten men, which proved crucial in determining the outcome.

Athletic Bilbao took full advantage, with Nico Williams scoring a brace and Yuri Berchiche adding another goal to put the Spanish side 3-0 ahead. In stoppage time, Roma’s Leandro Paredes converted a penalty, reducing the deficit to 3-1, but it was not enough to change the result.

With a 4-3 aggregate victory, Athletic Bilbao advanced to the quarter-finals, while Roma’s Europa League journey came to an end.

The Europa League quarter-final first legs are scheduled for April 10, with the second legs on April 17.
