Reports on social media have raised alarms about a supposed dangerous virus spreading in Tashkent, primarily affecting children and causing pneumonia. However, these concerns are unwarranted, according to Nurmat Otabekov, First Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Sanitary and Epidemiological Wellbeing and Public Health. He explained that seasonal respiratory diseases transmitted via airborne droplets are typical during the autumn-winter period, and there is no reason for public panic.

The Ministry of Health notes that acute respiratory diseases generally present with a range of symptoms. Early signs include nasal itching, reduced sense of smell, sneezing, and a runny nose. As the illness progresses, patients may experience sore throat, dryness, pain, hoarseness, and dry coughing. During recovery, symptoms such as sputum discharge and reduced coughing pain are common.

Addressing concerns about new viruses, Otabekov stated, “To date, around 45,000 mutations of the coronavirus have been recorded globally, and this process continues. However, only 10-15 mutations have led to illnesses in the past. There is no need to panic over mutations. No unfamiliar or unknown viruses are currently circulating in our country. Most cases are likely seasonal respiratory illnesses.”

To maintain a stable epidemiological situation, Otabekov advised the public to minimize visits to crowded areas, maintain social distancing, and use medical masks, especially caregivers and those interacting with patients.

Additionally, Dilfuza Rasulova, First Deputy Head of the Tashkent City Department of the Sanepidemiological Committee, previously announced that extra patient beds had been prepared in all medical and preventive institutions across Tashkent to handle potential increases in cases.

The government’s emphasis remains on public awareness and prevention to ensure health and safety during the seasonal rise in respiratory illnesses.
