Reports have circulated on social media claiming that acute respiratory viral infections (ARVIs) are rapidly spreading across the country, particularly in schools and kindergartens, leading to overcrowded clinics filled with unvaccinated children. In response, the Ministry of Health has commented on the situation, stating that the spread of seasonal respiratory diseases in Uzbekistan remains stable.
First Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Sanitary and Epidemiological Wellbeing and Public Health, Nurmat Atabekov, dismissed the reports as false.
"First of all, these social media claims are inaccurate. The current situation with seasonal respiratory diseases in our country is stable, and there is no cause for concern," Atabekov emphasized.
He explained that ARVIs, which are transmitted via airborne droplets, are common during autumn-winter and winter-spring seasons. The recent fluctuations in weather—from unseasonably warm temperatures to sudden snowfall—have contributed to an increase in respiratory illnesses.
"Frequent weather changes often lead to improper dressing for the season. Additionally, in such conditions, reduced air circulation in homes and enclosed spaces increases the concentration of viruses. Respiratory illnesses can be caused by a variety of viruses, including influenza, parainfluenza, rhinovirus, adenovirus, and even coronavirus. The current spread of ARVIs should be seen as a natural seasonal occurrence," Atabekov explained.
Symptoms of ARVIs include nasal itching, partial loss of smell, sneezing, and a runny nose. As the illness progresses, sore throat, hoarseness, and dry cough may develop. During recovery, symptoms gradually subside, with improved breathing and reduced coughing discomfort.
To maintain epidemiological stability, Atabekov advised infected individuals to limit visits to public places, practice social distancing, and wear medical masks—especially those who are sick and their caregivers. He also urged citizens to follow doctors' recommendations, consume immune-boosting foods like fruits, vegetables, and herbal teas, and dress appropriately for the season.
"We ask our compatriots to take these simple preventive measures seriously to help curb the spread of seasonal respiratory diseases," Atabekov concluded.
