Today, on 8 February, the fifth multilateral meeting of security representatives dedicated to the Afghan problem will be held in Moscow.  Secretary of the Security Council Nikolay Patrushev will participate on the Russian side.

National security advisers or secretaries of the Security Council of India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are also expected to participate in the event.

As noted in the press service of the Russian Security Council, the meeting “planned to discuss international security issues with special attention to the regulation of the situation in Afghanistan.”

The previous, fourth round of multilateral consultations on the Afghanistan problem was held in Dushanbe in May last year.  Speaking at the meeting, Patrushev noted that “the serious influence of the Afghan factor on regional security” continues.  In order to face these challenges and threats, he called for the continuation of the practice of multilateral meetings, as well as the activation of work on the entire spectrum of international communication mechanisms.

The third round of consultations was held in New Delhi in November 2021.  The parties adopted a joint statement.  In particular, they expressed firm support for a peaceful, stable and sovereign Afghanistan, strong condemnation of all terrorist acts and deep sorrow for the suffering of the Afghan people.
