On May 28, Prime Minister of Italy Giorgia Meloni, currently on an official visit to Uzbekistan, toured Samarkand’s iconic Registan Square accompanied by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The press service of the President of Uzbekistan reported the visit.

"Registan Square, a world-renowned site included on the UNESCO World Heritage List, is considered the symbol of Uzbekistan, showcasing the creative brilliance of our great ancestors. The Mirzo Ulugbek, Sherdor, and Tillakori madrasahs—each a masterpiece of Islamic architecture—leave a lasting impression on international guests with their majesty, historical significance, and unique design," the official statement noted.

Prime Minister Meloni received a comprehensive overview of the square’s history, architectural features, and decorative elements. She was also briefed on the prominent historical figures and events connected with the site, as well as its place within the cultural heritage of the Uzbek people.

Following the tour of Registan, President Mirziyoyev and Prime Minister Meloni visited the historical and ethnographic park "Boqiy Shahar", located within the "Silk Road Samarkand" international tourism complex. The delegation explored exhibitions showcasing Uzbekistan’s rich cultural traditions, handicrafts, and applied arts. The visit also featured a cultural program with performances by local dance ensembles.

The main events of Meloni’s official visit to Uzbekistan are scheduled for today, May 29, including high-level bilateral talks and other official engagements.

Tomorrow, May 30, Prime Minister Meloni will participate in the first-ever summit between Italy and the heads of Central Asian states, to be held in Astana.

It is worth noting that the Italian Prime Minister originally planned to visit Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan in late April, ahead of the summit initially scheduled for April 25–27. However, due to the passing of Pope Francis on April 21 and the national mourning that followed, the visit was postponed.
