The Ministry of Health has given its recommendations to the population on reducing the negative health effects of the sun’s ultraviolet rays.  Today, the 3rd May, it was reported that the ultraviolet radiation index of the sun in the capital city of Tashkent is expected to be 10 points on a 12-point scale.

Furthermore, the radiation will approach maximum level at midnight with its index at 10 points on the 12-point scale.  This will drop to 9 at 2:00 p.m., then 7 at 3:00 p.m., and 5 at 4:00 p.m.

According to the Republican Center of Scientific Specialized Allergology, it is necessary to take precautions as sunlight may cause allergic reactions at such a time. In particular, photodermatitis can occur as a result of increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight in such unfavorable weather conditions.

The sunlight itself is not considered an allergen.  However, when ultraviolet radiation interacts with the skin or any substance in the human body, an allergic reaction can occur.

As a result, various skin ailments such as blisters, bumps, red spots and rashes can appear on the upper part of the chest, neck, and arms.  Itching and swelling are may also be experienced.

In addition, the effect of ultraviolet rays on the mucous membrane of the eye causes conjunctivitis and keratitis, that is, inflammation of the iris.

Such inflammation can appear several hours after exposure to harmful light, and both are painful.  Similarly, ultraviolet rays also cause the development of cataracts.

Walking for a long time in the open air when the radiation index is high increases susceptibility to cancer and lowers immunity.

Therefore, on such days, it is not recommended to be out under the sun for long periods of time, in particular between the hours of 11:00 a.m. to 16:00 p.m. In unavoidable cases, take precautions such as wear a hat or bring an umbrella, wear sunglasses and clothes that cover your skin as much as possible.
