Uzbekistan’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United States, Furqat Siddiqov, has proposed establishing an International Uzbek Day. President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev approved the initiative. The proposal was discussed on January 15 this year during a videoconference meeting chaired by the President on the activities of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Uzbekistan’s diplomatic missions abroad.

During the meeting, Furqat Siddiqov said that Uzbeks living abroad are proposing the establishment of an International Uzbek Day.

“There was one request from our compatriots: through the assistance of embassies, to establish an International Uzbek Day and celebrate it worldwide. This is what they are asking from us,” Siddiqov said.

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev supported the initiative and stressed the need to implement it.

“This is a correct proposal. It is one of our long-held aspirations. We have reached this stage now, and it is time to make it happen,” the President said.

In addition, Shavkat Mirziyoyev instructed Uzbekistan’s ambassador to the United States to work on establishing an Uzbek cultural center in New York or Washington.

“I had promised to build a neighborhood-style cultural center in New York or Washington. Present proposals from entrepreneurs, involve partners from our side, and develop a solid project. Let us create a space for our compatriots. It should be a source of pride and honor for them. There should be restaurants flying our flag, and teahouses as well,” the President said.

The Uzbek leader also emphasized that this initiative should be implemented within the current year.

It is worth noting that during the same meeting, Furqat Siddiqov was also tasked with holding negotiations to include Uzbekistan in the list of countries whose citizens are recruited for seasonal work in the United States.
