Drunk driver kills two in Fergana region

5765A tragic accident involving a drunk driver has claimed the lives of two citizens in the Fergana region. The Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed the incident.
The accident occurred on the Kuva-Margilan-Marhamat highway, passing through the Yakkatut neighborhood in the Tashlok district. A 34-year-old driver of a Damas, speeding under the influence of alcohol, struck a bicyclist traveling ahead of him.
The driver then veered into the opposite direction, hitting a 5-year-old girl walking alongside her mother on the roadside before fleeing the scene. The elderly bicyclist, a 71-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the young girl succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.
A criminal case has been initiated, and the suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue.
According to regional data, 2,794 violations related to drunk driving were recorded in the Fergana region in 2024 alone.
This tragic event comes after another recent incident in Navoi city, where traffic patrol inspector Jasurjon Muhammadov was fatally struck by a vehicle while on duty.
