7614In the election of deputies to the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis and local Councils, it has been determined that political parties must ensure that at least 40 percent of their nominated candidates are women. This was announced today, July 26, at a meeting of the Central Election Commission.
A new system of electoral bodies, led by the Central Election Commission, has been introduced. This system mandates that two out of every five candidates must be women.
It was also established that a candidate for deputy must secure a relative majority of the votes. This means a candidate can be elected as a deputy if they receive more votes than other candidates in their electoral district, eliminating the need for a runoff election.
For reference, the election of deputies to the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis and local Councils will be held on October 27, 2024.
We remind you that, for the first time in Uzbekistan's history, the elections for the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis will be conducted using a mixed electoral system, combining majoritarian and proportional systems. Under this system, 75 deputies will be elected based on the majority system, where voters select their preferred candidate, and the remaining 75 deputies will be elected based on the proportional system, where votes are cast for political parties.
