From now on, individuals holding lavish weddings in Uzbekistan should pay a luxury tax calculated per guest. This was announced on January 16 by Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis and leader of the Milliy Tiklanish party, Alisher Kadyrov, during a press conference held by the Milliy Tiklanish Democratic Party.
At the press conference summarizing the party’s activities for 2025, the issue of reducing the scale of weddings and ceremonial events was raised.
“There is a saying among our people: stretch your legs according to your blanket. This needs to be properly understood. We should avoid wasting our income on weddings. We have always emphasized that this is one of the shortcomings of our nation. If the purpose of a wedding is to publicly announce the marriage of two young people, then let us do exactly that,” the lawmaker said.
However, it was also stated that spending large sums of money on weddings is not advisable and that these funds should instead be invested in more useful areas. According to Kadyrov, the most effective way to prevent excessive spending would be to introduce a tax.
“Do you want luxury? Then pay a luxury tax. You’re welcome. Do you want to invite 10,000 people to your wedding? Then let the tax be calculated per guest. Fine. Set the tax for 10,000 people in dollars. If that’s what you want, go ahead,” Kadyrov said.
Kadyrov emphasized that the proposal to introduce a “luxury tax” is intended to encourage people to reconsider how they spend their money and to change their outlook on excessive consumption.
