On July 16, during a meeting of the Council of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, a draft law proposing amendments to certain legal documents in Uzbekistan to strengthen protection against family (domestic) violence was discussed in its first reading. The Legislative Chamber's press service reported this development.

It was highlighted that the current law imposes criminal liability for domestic violence against a spouse or other cohabiting individuals but does not extend this responsibility to violence against children.

To address this gap, the proposed bill amends Article 126-1 of the Criminal Code to include liability for domestic violence against children.

Additionally, Article 583 of the Criminal Procedure Code will now include a provision stating: "A petition for conciliation in cases related to family (domestic) violence can be submitted at any stage of the trial, but before the court enters a separate room (consulting room)." The Code of Administrative Responsibility will also outline penalties for domestic violence against children.

In the Majlis, the draft law was passed by deputies in the third reading.
